As soon as the weather started to change allergies can kick-in into full gear. If you’re feeling the effects, we at Highlands Chiropractic have the support you may need.

Let’s discuss some important nutrients to help keep histamine levels down and you feeling your best:

N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) – NAC is used to relieve symptoms of respiratory conditions (allergies, sinus infections, lung involvement), by acting as an antioxidant and expectorant, loosening mucus in your air passageways. As an antioxidant, NAC helps to replenish glutathione levels in your lungs and reduce inflammation in your sinuses, bronchial tubes and lung tissue. NAC plays an important role in your body’s detoxification processes. It can help prevent side effects of drugs and environmental toxins (ahem, ALL Coloradans need this).

Vitamin C + Bioflavanoids (very important!) -To maximize the effectiveness of Vitamin C, it is best taken with citrus bioflavonoids, best taken in divided doses spaced throughout the day. The bioflavonoids enhance the activity of vitamin C in the body and help to stabilize mast cells, which secrete the histamine linked to allergic reactions.

Stinging Nettle – Reduces the symptoms of hay fever by acting as an anti-inflammatory. It is used in the relief of sneezing, runny nose, and itchy eyes.

Bromelain – Reduces allergic sensitivity and stops the development of other inflammatory responses affecting the lungs (I.e. in sinus infections lead to lung involvement). This enzyme helps modulate the entire immune system and prevent allergies by addressing the root cause – a hyperactive, oversensitive immune system.

Quercetin – (dihydroquercetin): A bioflavonoid and powerful antihistamine and anti-inflammatory that helps by fighting the natural process of “oxidation” that happens over time in our bodies. Quercetin is great at lowering the effects of seasonal AND food allergies, plus asthma and skin reactions by stabilizing the release of histamines from certain immune cells.

Rutin – A bioflavanoid that helps with proper blood circulation. When used with quercetin it becomes a powerhouse defense against histamine.
